Consultation

When we first speak on the phone, I’ll start by getting your and your pet’s details. You may have already made your mind up in which case we’ll discuss timings and get you booked in. If you need help with aftercare, I can help you arrange that. Should you, however, need a more in-depth consultation I offer a Zoom consultation service where I can help you arrive at the right decision for you. Every aspect will be guided by what is right for you.

At Home on the day

When I arrive, we will spend some time getting to know each other. Nothing is left to chance and each step explained in simple language such that there are no surprises. I can’t make this less sad for you, but I can remove much of the trauma associated with final goodbyes. For specific details please go to the relevant animal section under the services heading.

Aftercare

You may wish to bury your beloved pet at home however these days many people go for individual cremation with ashes either being picked up by yourselves or hand delivered by the crematorium back to you. I can help arrange this for you. Once again everything is tailored to your needs and wishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reasons to consider at home pet euthanasia
  • Comfort and Familiarity: At-home euthanasia provides a calm and familiar environment for both the pet and their owners during this difficult time.
  • Reduced Stress: Some pets may experience anxiety or fear when visiting a veterinary clinic, making at-home euthanasia a more suitable option.
  • Quality of Life: When a pet's quality of life deteriorates significantly due to illness, injury, or old age, at-home euthanasia can be a compassionate choice to prevent further suffering.
How will I know when the time is right?

This is one of the most simple to ask and complex to answer questions. Very often people turn. to cliches; things such as “You’ll know when the time is right”, “Your dog/cat will let you know” or “The right decision is easy to make”. My answer to these based on nearly 50 years of pet ownership and over 30 years as a vet is that the all we can ever do is make the best decision we can we with the information available to us at a given point in time. I bring a very intuitive and flexible approach to this question to help owners arrive at a decision that is the correct one for them.

Can I change my mind?
Yes of course you can but there is a cancellation charge policy. Cancellation of greater than 24 hours incurs no charge. Cancellation within 24 hours incurs a £50 charge. Cancellation on the day incurs a charge of half the visit fee.
What happens after my pet has passed away?

This is discussed at the booking stage. I work closely with carefully chosen pet crematoria. Some people want to take their pets to the crematorium. Others prefer it to be collected by the crematorium. Alternatively you may want to bury your pet at home or organise the crematorium themselves.

For small animals, cats and dogs up to 10kg I am happy to transfer them to the crematorium for a small additional fee.

How much notice do you need to book?

I work visits around other work commitments, so as much notice as you can give is really helpful. If you are needing an urgent last minute visit I will help if I can however I can’t guarantee to be available. It is especially helpful to plan visits ahead of time to be able to tie in with crematoriums, although they do try to be flexible, as I do.

Do you visit at weekends/ evenings?
I do offer weekend and evening home visit euthanasia appointments when I am available. I don’t offer out of hours (later than 9pm) appointments.
Will pet insurance cover the cost of home euthanasia?
Many insurance policies will cover the cost of sedation and euthanasia. Any additional milage charge would not be covered by most insurance policies. Check your individual policy if in doubt.

Starting practice as a mixed vet I realised my calling lay in the treatment of pets. I transitioned to a solely pet based practice. After years in general practice with a special interest in surgery, I took a break. Witnessing my cat’s distress during a vet visit inspired me to start A Calm Sleep, a home euthanasia practice. This has been a fulfilling career, allowing pet owners to say goodbye to their pet calmly, peacefully and at home – exactly as I say my final farewells.
