At home cat euthanasia

Putting your cat to sleep at home

A compassionate cat euthanasia service in Liverpool, Manchester and the North West

Putting a cat to sleep at home can be a compassionate choice. In their familiar surroundings, surrounded by loved ones, cats can experience a peaceful transition. This eliminates the stress of transportation and unfamiliar environments. Additionally, being at home offers pet owners the opportunity to say goodbye unhurriedly and in privacy.

What to expect

I will arrive at the pre-arranged time and spend time getting to know you and your pet. I will explain each step prior to it happening and make sure you are comfortable with the process. My job is to work around you – not the other way round. After the first injection your pet will slip gently into a very deep and calm sleep. Once fully asleep a second injection is given after which they will pass gently and peacefully away.

What’s included in the cost

A pre-visit consultation. The visit itself. If you have chosen cremation and your pet’s body will be respectfully transported to the crematoria I have carefully chosen. I am happy to do this for you for a small additional fee. You may wish to do this yourself. The crematoria fee is paid directly to the crematoria which I will arrange prior to the visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is it time to put my cat to sleep?

Cats behave differently than dogs when they are faced with chronic bad health and missing the tipping point from just being old and tired and genuinely suffering is all too easy. By, nature cats are nocturnal and many although they adapt reasonably well into our daytime habits, will as they age, revert to sleeping most of the day. Also, it is natural as all animals age to become less active.

Signs to watch out for are dramatic decreases in appetite. Is their coat well kept? Generally, healthy cats are fastidious and a change to not grooming can be a sign they are struggling. Are they relating to us as they always have? Changes in the toileting behaviour. Any changes in these behaviours can be a sign things are not as they should be.

This is huge decision, and I offer Zoom consultations to discuss in depth what you are seeing and guide through this stage of the decision-making process.

Why consider home euthanasia for cats?

In my opinion, as a lifelong cat owner, and long-term vet it is a reasonable observation that although dogs find it stressful to visit the vet’s, cats experience this stress on a different level. They are territorial animals and find both travelling in the car and visiting the vet’s extremely anxiety inducing. This will the final moments of your pet’s life and to not have that filled with terror, is my opinion, an incredibly kind thing to do.

How do you approach my cat?

It’s important to realise that cats are not small dogs!

I will typically once in the room ask if it ok for me to sit and I will talk to you. This gives your cat time to get used to my presence – both my sound and smell. Importantly I never wear clinical clothes for a home visit – they have, by some estimates, a sense of smell up to 10 000 times stronger than us – so I need not to smell like a vet. Then once they have heard me talking to you in a calm relaxed, way I introduce myself to them – let them smell me but all in a very low key way. I find, as a general concept, that I am relaxed around cats and a result most are relaxed with me

What happens after my cat has passed away?

This is discussed at the booking stage. I work closely with carefully chosen pet crematoria. Some people want to take their pets to the crematorium. Others prefer it to be collected by the crematorium. Alternatively you may want to bury your pet at home or organise the crematorium themselves.

For cats I am happy to transfer them to the crematorium for a small additional fee.

How much notice do you need to book?

I work visits around other work commitments, so as much notice as you can give is really helpful. If you are needing an urgent last minute visit I will help if I can however I can’t guarantee to be available. It is especially helpful to plan visits ahead of time to be able to tie in with crematoriums, although they do try to be flexible, as I do.

Will pet insurance cover the cost of home euthanasia?
Many insurance policies will cover the cost of sedation and euthanasia. Any additional milage charge would not be covered by most insurance policies. Check your individual policy if in doubt.
